Roman Anthony to miss second straight game Tuesday with "mid-back tightness"

Roman Anthony will miss his second straight game with back tightness Tuesday night, but the Boston Red Sox don't expect their rookie phenom to be out for long. Anthony was set to hit third and play right field in Boston's series opener against the Kansas City Royals at Fenway Park on Monday night. But he was scratched just a few minutes before first pitch with what the team is calling "mid-back tightness." Boston manager Alex Cora didn't sound concerned with the 21-year-old outfielder, but did say Anthony would get a second straight day off Tuesday. "I'll stay away from him tomorrow," Cora said after Monday's 8-5 win over the Royals. "He'll be OK to play tomorrow but he took today and I'll give him tomorrow, too." While it's never good to hear of a 21-year-old dealing with a bad back, it sounds like the Red Sox are just being overly cautious with their potentially generational rookie. NESN cameras caught the moment Anthony initially felt something during his pre-game stretching routine. He quickly called over team trainers, and was scratched a few minutes later. He said the issue popped up "super sudden." "Everything felt normal all day. I felt something as I was stretching on the line. I figured we'd be cautious with it," said Anthony. "Just was super uncomfortable and relayed that quickly and just decided we were going to shut it down." The good news is Anthony said he was already feeling better when he spoke with reporters following Monday's win. Anthony hasn't gone for an MRI, and all signs point to him avoiding a trip to the injured list with the injury. Wilyer Abreu replaced Anthony in the lineup Monday night, and went 2-for-3 with an RBI single out of the three-hole. The Red Sox will host the Royals Tuesday and Wednesday before getting an off day Thursday, and will then head out on a six-game road trip to San Diego and Houston. Anthony was the No. 1 prospect in baseball when the Red Sox called him up on June 9. He's played in 46 games since making his debut, and has slashed .283/.400/.428 with a .828 OPS for Boston. Anthony is currently riding an eight-game hitting streak, where he's slashed .414/.541/.586 with a 1.127 OPS to go with three doubles, a triple, and seven runs scored. He was the hero of Friday night's win over the Astros at Fenway Park, when he socked a game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning to lift Boston to a 2-1 victory.

With trade deadline looming, Dodgers showcase their revived offense in win over Boston

It remains unclear exactly how much, if at all, the Dodgers will bolster their offense ahead of next week's trade deadline. But after a pitiful start to the month of July, their current lineup is finally showing renewed signs of life. The Dodgers might not have bludgeoned the Boston Red Sox in a 5-2 win Friday — when they were without shortstop Mookie Betts while he was away with his family because of a personal situation — picking up their third victory in the last four games in a series-opener at Fenway Park. Read more: Facing Dodgers for first time gives Walker Buehler chance to reflect on his time in L.A. But, after averaging three runs per game with a .205 team batting average over the first nine games of July, they continued showing signs that the ship is turning around again, recording at least five runs for the seventh time in their last 10 games. The most impactful performance Friday came from one of the Dodgers' most disappointing hitters over the last two months: Veteran outfielder Teoscar Hernández. After re-signing with the Dodgers (61-43) this offseason — over interest from several other teams, the Red Sox (55-50) chief among them — Hernández started the season hot before missing two weeks with an adductor strain in May. Ever since, the veteran had looked glaringly off, batting below .200 over 48 games. At the end of this past week's homestand on Wednesday, however, Hernández recorded his first three-hit game since April. And on Friday, he kept the momentum going, drawing a run-scoring walk with the bases loaded in the third inning before belting a two-run insurance homer in the top of the eighth. Andy Pages played a key role Friday, as well, continuing his own upward trajectory after a trying couple of weeks. From June 26 to July 19, Pages saw what was once a near-.300 batting average tumble, hitting .206 over an 18-game stretch. The slide helped keep him from reaching the All-Star Game, then continued for the first two games coming out of the break — making him one of many Dodgers hitters mired in a midseason slump. But in the last four games of the team's recent homestand, Pages had two home runs and two multi-hit games. On Friday, his recent surge continued, with Pages doubling and scoring in the second inning, hitting a sacrifice fly after Hernández's walk in the third, and singling again after Hernández's big fly in the eighth. There were other bright spots in the Dodgers' win. Will Smith went two for five to raise his National League-leading batting average to .325. Freddie Freeman had a pair of singles, recording consecutive multi-hit games for only the second time since early June. And while Shohei Ohtani saw his home run streak snapped at five games, he still managed to reach safely twice. Read more: Beyond the bullpen, how aggressive will the Dodgers be at the MLB trade deadline? Two hitters who could be more important to the Dodgers' deadline calculus struggled, with Michael Conforto going only one for four (albeit with a sixth-inning double) and Hyeseong Kim extending his recent slump with a golden sombrero (four strikeouts). But on the whole, the offense (which combined for 10 total hits, the third time that has happened in the last 10 games) did enough to back up a five-inning, two-run start from Emmet Sheehan and the first scoreless effort from the Dodgers' beleaguered bullpen since July 3. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa) BOSTON (AP) — Ceddanne Rafaela hit a go-ahead, two-run double during a three-run seventh inning and the Boston Red Sox earned their season-high seventh straight win by beating the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 on Thursday. Boston starter Walker Buehler gave up three runs off five hits, including two home runs, over six innings. Chris Murphy (1-0) and Garrett Whitlock pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth, and Aroldis Chapman struck out two in the ninth to pick up his 16th save and 1,300th strikeout. Advertisement Junior Caminero hit a two-run home run and Ha-Seong Kim added a solo homer for the Rays. Tampa's Taj Bradley allowed one run off two hits over six innings, striking out five. But reliever Bryan Baker (3-3), who was making his Rays debut after being traded by the Baltimore Orioles, surrendered all three Boston runs in the seventh. Boston struck first when Roman Anthony lined a two-out RBI single into right field in the third inning. The Rays responded when Kim took Buehler to a full count and drove his 89-mph slider just over the top of the Green Monster for his first homer of the season to put the Rays in front 2-1. Advertisement Caminero made it 3-1 in the sixth, connecting on Buehler's first pitch of the inning for a solo home run, his 23rd this season. Key moment Trailing 3-1, the Red Sox opened the seventh by drawing back-to-back walks off Baker. That was followed by an RBI double by Marcelo Mayer and the two-run single by Rafaela to put the Red Sox in front. Key stats Tampa Bay rookie Chandler Simpson extended his hitting streak to 14 games, the longest by a rookie in Rays history. Up next RHP Drew Rasmussen (7-5, 2.78 ERA) is scheduled to make his first start against Boston since July 14, 2022. LHP Garrett Crochet (9-4, 2.39) has won three of his last four starts. ___ AP MLB:

Red Sox' Wilyer Abreu makes history with two firsts on 'very special' night

BOSTON — On any other night, hitting two homers in the same game would make for a pretty special achievement. And for one of those home runs to be a grand slam would make it even noteworthy. But to hit a grand slam and an inside-the-park homer in the same game? That would be history-making. Advertisement To put things in perspective, Wilyer Abreu had never hit an inside-the-park homer or a grand slam in his career. Then, he hit both within the span of a few innings. That's the kind of night he had Monday night. In a 13-6 rout of the Cincinnati Reds, the Red Sox right fielder circled the bases in the fifth inning on a ball that bounced around the triangle in right-center, then added a bases-loaded shot over the bullpen three innings later. 'When I hit the ball, I thought it was a home run,' said Abreu of the inside-the-park shot. 'When I saw that the ball was heading to the triangle, I thought the ball might not be (going out), so I started running hard and luckily, I was able to get an inside-the-parker.' Advertisement The ball struck the top railing of the Red Sox bullpen nearest center field and bounded away from Cincinnati center fielder T.J. Friedl. As Abreu motored past second, he could hear the crowd urging him on and then got waved home by third base coach Kyle Hudson, beating the relay throw home from shortstop Elly de la Cruz. 'I was screaming, 'Run!' from the get-go,' said Alex Cora. 'For some reason, it's the summer, it's hot, but (Fenway) doesn't play like back in the day; it doesn't. Me and (Jason Varitek), we've been talking about it the last couple of days. So when he hit it, he thought he had it (out), but I was yelling, 'Run!' Then after that, he did.' 'That's something that doesn't happen every day,' said Abreu. 'I saw the last time it happened (for a member of the Red Sox) was 2018 or something like that, so it was very special for me to be the one.' 'To me,' said teammate Trevor Story, 'it's one of the most exciting plays in the game. I'm jealous because I don't have one yet. I'm always rooting for it, and seeing the possibility of it off the bat...I knew he hit it to the deepest part. I was kind of telling him, 'Hey, let's go! Let's go!' because you never know what can happen out there. But he made it easily. He was in no hurry in the beginning, so he deserved that one. That was awesome.' Advertisement Abreu said he had never hit an inside-the-park homer at any level before. Asked which he enjoyed more - the inside-the-park homer or the grand slam, he equivocated some. 'Obviously, the inside-the-parker, but you get tired,' he said with a smile. 'So for me, if you hit the ball and just jog around the bases, it's better.' The Red Sox have been pushing Abreu to drive fastballs down in the zone, and Cincinnati reliever Connor Phillips threw him one in the eighth that Abreu didn't miss. 'He gets a lot of pitches, especially fastballs, and he fouls them straight back,' Cora said. 'There's been a lot of communication lately about who you are as a hitter and what we need to attack. It's getting to the point of the season that tendencies are out there and you know who you are. So far, it's been an outstanding season for him. It's been great.' Advertisement Abreu became the first Red Sox player since Eduardo Nunez on March 29, 2018 to hit an inside-the-park homer and the first to do so at Fenway since Jacoby Ellsbury on Sept. 19, 2011. He also became only the fifth player in baseball history to hit an inside-the-park homer and a grand slam, joining Everett Scott (1923) Charlie Gehringer (1930), Jim Tabor of the Red Sox (1939) and Roger Maris (1958). Monday marked the eighth time in Red Sox history that a player had hit an inside-the-park homer and a conventional homer in the same game, and the first since Pokey Reese on May 8, 2004. Since returning from an IL stint with an oblique strain, Abreu is hitting .324 with three homers and 13 RBI in 10 games. Advertisement '(The at-bats) have been incredible,' said Abreu. 'I feel very good since coming back from the IL and you can see the results.' Abreu has 16 homers this season, or more than he hit all of last year, his first full season in the big leagues. He's on pace to hit nearly 30, but doesn't want to get caught up in projections. 'We'll see at the end of the year, what the numbers say,' he said. 'Personally, I feel very comfortable at the plate, I feel healthy. I feel like the experience is helping me a little more to get some adjustments going.' 'He's just an impact bat,' said Story of Abreu. 'He can do it all, man. He's very simple at the plate, he's very repeatable (with his swing). When he's hitting four-seamers like that, he can be really dangerous. Advertisement 'He turned around 99 mph a couple of times tonight. He's got 16 and he's missed a couple weeks of games. Just shows you the impact of his bat. He's a big part of our team.' More Red Sox coverage Read the original article on MassLive.
